This month saw the latest achievement for the Foundation with the winning of the ‘Inspiring Futures’ trophy at the prestigious Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce Northern Star Business Awards ceremony held at TECA.
Alison MacLachlan, from RAF project partner The Wood Foundation, in support of the award, commented."What RAF deliver on a modest budget is humbling and inspiring. Over our nine-year partnership, we’ve seen them grow as a team and evolve their work to align with community needs, always keeping young people at the heart of every decision."
Russell, who was present at the event to collect the award, said the accolade was testimony to the varied work RAF does to encourage youngsters to fulfil their potential."It’s justified recognition for the effort that RAF staff and coaches undertake throughout our partner schools and I, and everyone else at the Foundation, are very proud to receive it."
The Foundation’s activities to inspire the next generation about the world of work go beyond traditional sports training, focusing on practical experiences that build both confidence and transferable skills.
Through initiatives like the Young Leaders Programme, older pupils take on mentoring roles, gaining first-hand leadership experience and learning to communicate and collaborate effectively, all key skills that will serve them in any workplace.
In the Kirkhill Skills Hub, launched as a dedicated space for children to develop meta-skills, young learners engage in activities that mirror real-world challenges. Projects like budgeting, problem-solving, and food preparation not only teach practical skills but also expose children to a variety of career paths, including culinary arts and engineering.
Moreover, the Foundation’s partnership with NHS Scotland delivers Health and Wellbeing Workshops, where pupils are educated on self-care, nutrition, and first aid. These workshops enhance their understanding of healthcare careers while equipping them with life skills that foster personal responsibility, an essential trait in any professional setting.
The Foundation also runs Holiday Camps, which keep children engaged during school breaks, ensuring continuity in learning and skill development. These camps promote teamwork and help children set personal goals, key components of workplace readiness.
